FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How
often is the newsletter issued?
A. Weekly --
every Monday except holiday weeks, when it is emailed on Tuesdays.
Q. What
do you do with my email address?
A. We just
send you the weekly newsletters and related information. Our Privacy Policy is
here.
Q. Your
free email newsletter stopped coming. What happened?
A. Some ISP's
have installed "spam filters" which occasionally block good email; be sure
"jeff1620 @jmbcommunications.com," now our main send-only outgoing email address
for free newsletters, is in your "allowed" list, to prevent it from being
blocked. Hotmail, Earthlink, Yahoo, Verizon, Adelphia, and AOL users
particularly must add these send addresses to their whitelists of acceptable
senders. (We injected an extra space in this address here for spam prevention
purposes; when you "whitelist" it in your mail program, delete the extra space
please.)
Q. I did
that but still get no newsletters. Now what?
A. If you
have subscribed to our newsletter and are not receiving it, you may have
mistyped your email address. Try signing up again. If the system lets you
resubscribe, then your previous subscription was mistyped. The system will tell
you if you are already subscribed. It won't let you subscribe twice.
Q. Did
that too. What do I try now?
A. Phone your
ISP and tell them that you subscribe to a weekly newsletter sent from "jeff1620
@jmbcommunications.com," and that you have verified it is being mailed weekly to
your correct email address but you're not receiving it. Good ISPs will follow up
to be sure the mail gets through.
Q. I'm
going to install a "mail-blocker" program like Mailwiper or Spamarrest® to stop
spam. Is there anything I have to do to be sure I still get JWS emails?
A. Yes there
is. Since jeff1620 @jmbcommunications.com is a send-only email address, we get
no word of failed deliveries or "bounces". If you use a "mail-blocker" program,
that program will email us and ask if we exist, and it will send you our emails
only when we respond affirmatively. We won't receive such emails because
"jeff1620@" is a no-respond, outgoing mail-only address. You need to be sure you
plug jeff1620 @jmbcommunications.com into your "acceptable email addresses" list
to continue to receive our emails. Our staff is small and we cannot spend time
answering "Spamarrest" or "Mailwiper" or similar address verification emails.
Q.Will
you change my email address please?
A. We don't
touch email addresses for the free list. Instructions on unsubscribing old
addresses and subscribing new addresses come with the weekly free-list
newsletters. However, if you want to change your email address for JMB Website
Supporters mailings, email us at the address we gave you when you joined and
we'll make the change. You cannot change your email address for JMB Website
Supporters emails by yourself.
Q. I get
JWS mailings. Should I cancel the free list?
A. NO! If you
do, you will not get the latest SXM news. A great deal of material of importance
just for JMB Website Supporters members is in most "free" newsletters, with
links to the secret site. Please stay on the "free" list.
Q. I have
questions about accessing the JMB Website Supporters "secret site." How do I get
answers?
A. Look
here.

About Your Safety in St. Maarten / St. MartinIs there crime in St. Maarten? Unfortunately the only place where we think there ISN'T crime these days is Antarctica. The crime rate is lower than many other islands. We have always felt quite safe there, but the island is not crime-free and savvy tourists always take precautions. (It's paradise, not utopia.)

Airlines Flying to St. Maarten / St. Martin, and How To Get Low-Cost AirfaresWe are frequently asked how you can find the lowest airfares. We have one red-flag warning to everyone who is searching for the lowest fares: if possible, never search at the last minute. Hunting for low airfares when you have a tight short-term deadline is the worst way to buy tickets. Some people join JMB Website Supporters expecting to find low airfares overnight. If sales are underway [wholesale, retail, or unadvertised], they'll succeed. On the other hand, if sales are not underway when you are looking for fares, you will have to be patient to find the fares you want.

Medical Preparations for Travel To St. Maarten / St. MartinPerhaps two years ago, we first mentioned "emergency medical evacuation." This story tells you what "medical evacuation" has to do with you, and why taking care of this before your next trip is so important.
First a brief personal note. In 1996, I contracted "Ciguatera" (which I had never heard of) in the tropics. I won't tell you all the symptoms (you may be having your morning coffee and a bagel), but I lost about 40 lbs in a month. Andy at Baywatch on Orient Beach later told me he saw a guy fall off a stool at a restaurant, overcome by Ciguatera. (Google it). Bottom line, I got better and am fine, but it could have been much worse....
Vacation Packing ListDepending on where you're going, who is going with you (spouse / significant other / parents / grandparents / friends / kids) you'll want to change this list. However, if you've ever forgotten anything important and then been faced with the cost of replacing it while away, that can be a pain. We hope this list helps!

Summit Resort: Our Favorite Hotel/Timeshare in SXMWe visit St. Maarten often enough to have selected accommodations which feel a bit like home -- friendly, comfortable, and convenient. Usually, you'll find us at Summit Resort, on a hilltop in the Cupecoy area overlooking Simpson Bay Lagoon. We first went there 24 years ago on a charter. It's a great place, totally rebuilt after 1995 Hurricane Luis. Summit offers both hotel accommodations and timesharing with all the amenities.

An Overview of St. Maarten/St. Martin History & CultureThe history of the Caribbean is filled with stories of colonial imperialism where islands changed hands from country to country. St. Maarten was no ace in the imperial holdings, but had its share of skirmishes and smoky gun battles, which caused the island to change hands many times between the Spanish, Dutch, English and French powers.
