Kangaroo
Court is owned by Su and Norm Wathey. "In the early 90s, Philipsburg
needed an in-town tropical oasis, a place where both tourists and people
using the Courthouse could come and relax," says Su.
Norm adds, "I've always been a fanatic about coffee
and there was nowhere then to get really good coffee in town. Now there
is."
Why do they call it "Kangaroo Court"? "We just thought
it was a catchy name for a restaurant next to a courthouse. The judges
take it in good humor," Norm says.
In case you're wondering, Cornell University's Legal
Information Institute says a "kangaroo court" is "an unfair trial in
which the rights of the accused and precepts of justice are ignored and
the outcome is usually known beforehand."
Our Kangaroo Court simply banishes hunger.
Where did the term originate? Some people think it
started during the 1849 California gold rush, which was joined by many
Australian gold prospectors. There were supposedly informal trials held
in the area to control claim jumping, and the juxtaposition between
"jumping" and "kangaroos" was natural. But that may be just an urban
legend: nobody really knows where the expression "kangaroo court"
originated.
But they do know our Kangaroo Court! Come in and
relax. You'll always be a friend of the Court!
